5 freight projects move forward after Metro East gets $18.7 million

“The Illinois Department of Transportation has given the Metro East nearly $18.7 million to go toward funding six infrastructure projects, including four deemed priority projects by St. Louis Regional Freightway.

The funding comes from the IDOT’s new Competitive Freight Program that addresses local freight issues. IDOT received 46 applications requesting about $600 million in funds. The Metro East received $18.7 million of the $241 million that was allocated.

Among the local projects to receive the funding is the Interstate 270-Illinois Route 111 interchange, a $1.2 billion project to reconstruct the 22-mile I-270 corridor that serves Lakeview Commerce Center and Gateway Commerce Center logistics parks. It was what Freightway Executive Director Mary Lamie called “the big one” in infrastructure projects in a recent Business Journal Table of Experts discussion.
