2,000-plus Missouri and Illinois transportation projects start in first year of federal infrastructure legislation

More than 2,000 new transportation projects began in Missouri and Illinois in the first year after a major federal infrastructure funding bill, according to an industry group study.

Work began on 872 transportation projects in Missouri and 1,220 in Illinois in the first year after the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, according to research by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association. The study, based on U.S. Treasury data through Sept. 30, found that more than 29,000 new projects began in the infrastructure act’s first year, according to a release.

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, enacted in November 2021, provides for $1.2 trillion in federal spending during a five-year period, including $550 billion in new spending on transportation, broadband, water and air infrastructure.
